Melasma and hyperpigmentation are among the most complex skin concerns to treat. Successful pigment correction isn’t about aggressively removing discoloration—it begins with understanding the cause, controlling inflammation, and creating a treatment plan that works with the skin rather than against it.
Melasma is a chronic pigmentation condition that typically appears as irregular brown or gray-brown patches, most commonly on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and jawline.
Unlike ordinary sunspots, melasma can be influenced by multiple factors including hormones, UV exposure, visible light, heat, genetics, and inflammation. This is why melasma often returns and why I approach it differently from other forms of pigmentation.
When treating melasma, excessive heat or inflammation can potentially stimulate additional pigment production. Certain laser and energy-based treatments can be appropriate for carefully selected patients, but melasma-prone skin requires a particularly thoughtful approach.
My philosophy is to progressively improve pigmentation while supporting skin health and minimizing unnecessary inflammation.
3 WEEKS BEFORE TREATMENT
The skin is primed with a customized home-care regimen including a retinoid and Skinbetter Science Even Tone Correcting Serum. Proper preparation is an essential part of the protocol and helps create the optimal environment for treatment. 20% Discount on prep products with Purchase of Program.
6 MICRONEEDLING SESSIONS | EVERY 2–3 WEEKS
Each treatment combines advanced microneedling with a professional serum specifically selected to target pigmentation, followed by DP Dermaceuticals ÜBER Pro Peel.
This combination allows me to address pigmentation through controlled skin renewal while taking a progressive approach to melasma-prone skin.
WHY MICRONEEDLING?
Microneedling creates controlled microchannels in the skin while stimulating the natural remodeling process. It also allows specifically selected professional serums to be incorporated into the treatment protocol.
For melasma, the goal isn’t aggressive resurfacing. It is controlled, progressive treatment designed to improve uneven pigmentation, skin texture, and overall skin quality.
WHY MICRONEEDLING VS. LASERS?
Melasma is highly sensitive to heat and inflammation. While certain lasers can improve pigmentation in carefully selected patients, the heat they generate may also trigger melanin production and contribute to rebound pigmentation.
Microneedling works differently. It creates controlled micro-injuries without relying on heat, while allowing targeted professional serums to be incorporated into the treatment. For melasma-prone skin, I prefer this progressive approach to improve pigmentation while minimizing unnecessary heat and inflammation.
WHY NOT RF MICRONEEDLING?
RF microneedling combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy, which generates heat within the skin. While this can be beneficial for concerns such as skin laxity and collagen remodeling, heat may stimulate pigment activity in melasma-prone skin.
For my melasma protocol, I prefer traditional microneedling without added heat. This allows controlled skin remodeling and targeted serum delivery while minimizing one of melasma’s potential triggers.
HOME CARE IS ESSENTIAL
Professional treatments are only part of successful melasma management. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, appropriate pigment-regulating ingredients, antioxidants, and consistent home care are essential to achieving and maintaining results.
Melasma is a condition we manage rather than permanently cure. Sun exposure, heat, hormones, and other triggers can cause pigmentation to return, making long-term maintenance especially important.
IS THIS PROTOCOL RIGHT FOR YOU?
Not all pigmentation is melasma, and not every client should be treated the same way. Before beginning the protocol, I evaluate your skin, pigmentation pattern, current skincare, and treatment history to determine the most appropriate approach.
